01
ALL PUREBRED SCOTTISH FOLDS COME FROM THE SAME CAT
Although many cat breeds have a mysterious history with no way to pinpoint their precise origin, the exact opposite is true of Scottish Folds. The breed originated with a cat found in Coupar Angus, Scotland. A shepherd named William Ross discovered a white barn cat named Susie who had given birth to a litter of kittens that had the same folded ears as her. Ross took one of the kittens, started breeding it with both barn cats and British Shorthairs, and the rest is history.
02
NOT ALL SCOTTISH FOLDS HAVE THE TRADEMARK EARS
Scottish Fold kittens are all born with straight ears. If their ears fold at all, it happens when they are about three or four weeks old. Scottish Folds who have straight ears are, rather obviously, known as "Straights." Additionally, this breed has both shorthair and longhair varieties.
03
SCOTTISH FOLDS ARE NOTORIOUSLY QUIET
Scottish Folds are very quiet cats, and when they do make noise, it is very soft. They are known for their "small" voices and rarely speak.
04
THE BUDDHA POSITION IS THEIR FAVORITE POSE
Scottish Folds have an odd way of sitting that is known as the "Buddha Position." Their hind legs are stretched out in front of them while their front paws rest on their stomach. It may look uncomfortable, but many cats of this breed prefer to sit this way. They are also fond of flopping onto their backs when taking a nap.
05
MARU IS A SCOTTISH FOLD
Maru, an Internet sensation who is famous for his love of boxes, is none other than a Scottish Fold. Although the celebrity feline doesn't have the telltale folded ears, he can indeed count himself as one. Best known for YouTube videos featuring himself and his favorite box of the week, Maru is also quite fond of the "Buddha Position" of Scottish Folds.
06
THIS IS A SOCIAL BREED
Scottish Folds are friendly towards everyone, including other cats, people and even dogs. They like to be around people and get along especially well with children. Expect a Scottish Fold to stick close to you at home, following you from room to room and even engaging you in a game of fetch.
07
SCOTTISH FOLDS GO WITH THE FLOW
This breed is very easygoing and doesn't scare easily. Large families with busy households or multiple pets don't faze Scottish Folds. They adjust well to a new home, a new pet or a new baby in their house.
08
THIS BREED HAS MANY NICKNAMES
The resemblance between Scottish Folds and owls is startlingly similar, earning them the moniker of "owls in cat suits." They were also originally referred to as "lop-eared," which is what Ross named them after first creating the breed. Their name is also shortened sometimes to "Folds," and longhaired cats of this breed are referred to as "Highland Folds."
09
TAYLOR SWIFT OWNS TWO SCOTTISH FOLDS
Chart-topping singer Taylor Swift is mother to not one but two Scottish Folds, who are topping the cuteness charts themselves. Meredith Grey is a gray and white Scottish Fold that Swift adopted in 2011. Recently, a white Scottish Fold named Olivia Benson joined the family.

SCOTTISH FOLDS ARE NOT A RECOGNIZED BREED IN EUROPE
Even though this breed hails from a European country, it doesn't officially exist in the eyes of the European Cat Fanciers' Association. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy banned Scottish Folds during the 1960s due to concerns over ear health and subsequent deafness. The health issue has since been addressed and disproved, but the ruling stands.
